Seismic, Seminal Stage
Jenison, Michigan's former club The Underground was the coolest venue many conservative Christian teenagers and young adults ever experienced. That was certainly the case for me, a Hope College junior in the spring of 1997. In addition to the Plankeye*/The Altered, Fold Zandura/All Star United*/Kosmos Express, and MxPx/Stavesacre shows listed above, I also witnessed Christafari* and Puller in concert at The Underground -- with autographed CD booklets (see below) to prove it. I am saddened that the now-defunct live music spot is one that I will never be able to revisit, as nostalgia is heightened during this COVID-19 chapter in American history.
* I couldn't have known in 1997 that years later I would be tapped to serve as a drummer for a band slated to open for Plankeye, interview All Star United for HM Magazine, or serve on a church worship team with a former Christafari band member.
