A Look Back: Laura Mvula Concert Cancellation

I have mourned a few concert cancellations over the years.  I was especially deflated when British R&B/soul/jazz singer/songwriter/composer Laura Mvula cancelled her Nashville debut in 2013.  Thankfully, I have a ticket to document my attempt to see Mvula manifest.

A Look Back: Esperanza Spalding in Concert

As I continue to endeavor to complete my concert cataloging, I was surprised to recently realize that I forgot to document the Esperanza Spalding show I experienced.  I saw the jazz bassist/singer/songwriter at Nashville's 3rd & Lindsley on July 2, 2015.  Times like these make me very grateful to have physical evidence (in this case, a ticket stub) of my concert life.

A Look Back: Fundamental Elements in Concert

If memory serves me, I saw the pop/rock/soul/funk band Fundamental Elements in concert twice, likely at Nashville's 3rd & Lindsley both times.  It is very possible that one or both of the shows included a shared bill with Scratch Track.  Conversely, it's also possible that I witnessed ST live twice at 3rd & Lindsley; once with FE.  While I don't have ticket stubs or any other concrete information to document those gigs, I do still have the CD that I bought from FE -- sans any artwork -- that they released in 2003 under the name Fundamentals.  I still enjoy Birth of a Brand New Me while tooling around town in my car.

A Look Back: DJ Dream Come True

When I was 18, one of my dreams came true -- I became a radio disc jockey.  As a freshman, I joined the on-air staff of my college station, WTHS.  I DJed all four years of my college career, two of which I hosted a rare, specialty show.  During my tenure, I was pleased to work my way up from a lowly DJ sub to station traffic director, eventually serving as the operations director.  At the time, the station sported the tagline "The Alternative," as we played primarily alternative indie rock, a la CMJ.  Back then, we had no fancy equipment or Web site (to be fair, my time at the station was essentially pre-internet).  It was all and only about the music.

Grrrls will be grrls!

I don't remember the last band t-shirt I purchased.  (Contenders include Delirious?, Seven Day Jesus, and The World Wide Message Tribe.)  It's likely been 20 years or more.  I do, however, remember when I first saw punk/pop band The Linda Lindas perform.  After enjoying seeing the quartet rock out in the movie Moxie early this year, I was thrilled to see the recent coverage of their live performance of "Racist, Sexist Boy" garner mass attention to both their message and their music.  I immediately went to their site and pre-ordered a couple of t-shirts, which just arrived yesterday.  Long live live music and The Linda Lindas!
